Sonic Branding Glossary
Sonic Branding Glossary
Plain-English definitions of the terms used across sonic and audio branding.
Audio Logo
A short, original piece of music or sound, typically 2-5 seconds, used as a brand's signature sound. Think of the Netflix "ta-dum" or the Intel chime.
Sonic Logo
Another common term for an audio logo; the two are used interchangeably in the industry.
Sonic Identity
The complete system of sound built around a brand's audio logo, including brand music, hold music, and ad audio, all sharing the same musical DNA.
Mnemonic
A short sound or phrase designed to be easily remembered and instantly recognizable, the core function of an audio logo.
Brand Recall
A customer's ability to remember a brand after being exposed to it. Consistent sound is one of the strongest, most underused levers for improving recall.
Earworm
A short musical phrase that gets stuck in a listener's head. A well-designed audio logo is often, intentionally, an earworm.
Psychoacoustics
The study of how humans perceive and are affected by sound, the underlying science behind why certain audio choices feel trustworthy, energetic, or calming.
Jingle
A short advertising song with lyrics, distinct from an audio logo, which is typically wordless and much shorter.
Timbre
The tonal quality of a sound, what makes a piano note and a violin note playing the same pitch sound different. Timbre is a key ingredient in a brand's distinct sound.
Brand Recognition
The broader ability of a customer to identify a brand from a partial cue, a sound, a color, a shape, without seeing the full logo or name.
